Walk – Lower Clapton and the Round Chapel

Last modified date

Lower Clapton Guided Walk with visit to the Round Chapel
led by Julia Lafferty
Saturday 16 October
11am-1pm

For our first physical event in 20 months, Julia Lafferty will take us on a walk around the Clapton Square Conservation Area, revealing the area’s radical past, including the visits made by Lenin to a Bolshevik sympathiser in Clapton and the women’s suffrage campaigner who took on the Government and won.

The walk will be preceded at 11.00am by an opportunity to view the interior of the Victorian monument to non-conformism that is the Grade II* listed Round Chapel on Lower Clapton Road. Built as the Clapton Park Congregational Church, Pevsner described this as “one of the finest Non-conformist buildings in London” with a “magnificent interior, both festive and functional”.

Julia is a trustee of the Hackney Society, a member of the Clapton Conservation Areas Advisory Committee and secretary of the Friends of Clapton Cinematograph Theatre.

This is our first face-to-face event since February 2020! Please be prepared to wear a mask inside the chapel and be mindful of social distancing where appropriate.

Places are limited and will be charged at £5 for members and £10 for non-members.
We’ll meet outside the Round Chapel, corner of Lower Clapton Road and Glenarm Road, E5 0NP, at 10:45 for an 11am start
